Healing and caring for animals with knowledge and compassion

Veterinary Science

In this one-year course offered at both Hull Street and Courthouse, students will learn about veterinary science in a classroom setting, on-site visits, as well as in a simulated small animal veterinary hospital, with hands-on training in small animal care. The course will introduce students to the technical knowledge and skills needed to succeed in careers involving companion animals, including but not limited to, pet care industries, government agencies, laboratory research institutions, pharmaceutical occupations and veterinary medical assisting and technology, as well as post-secondary education. Additional educational opportunities include special guest speakers, animal demonstrations and field trips to animal care facilities. Students will also learn workplace readiness and leadership skills to further them on their pathway to success. Lab fee, private health insurance, and uniforms are required.

Veterinary Science offers a Dual Enrollment college credit opportunity through Blue Ridge Community College. Candidates must have a high school GPA of at least 2.0. The cost of the college credit is projected to be about $462 in addition to lab fees and uniform/equipment charges. The college credits can be used at Blue Ridge, but typically do not transfer to four-year universities. Dual-enrolled students can earn 12 college credits comprising a Career Studies Certificate in Veterinary Assisting from the college. When applying for Veterinary Science, students may indicate interest in pursuing dual enrollment. A limited number of dual-enrolled seats are available; they will be offered to the highest-scoring applicants who indicate interest. If admitted, dual enrollment candidates will receive information about how to register with the college and will be scheduled to attend the Courthouse campus. Students not participating for dual enrollment credit will participate at the Honors level.

This program is offered as Honors credit with the expectation that students complete four projects throughout the year that extend beyond the standard curriculum. These projects are built into the program and are a great opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of the topics covered in class.
