Sheryl Doswell

Principal

Greetings Falling Creek Middle School Community! My name is Sheryl Doswell and I am excited about leading this phenomenal team of teachers and staff of Falling Creek Middle School Panthers as the principal for the 2020-2021 school year. Our mission is for young adolescent students to learn, grow, develop and thrive in an ever changing world. Collaboratively as a school community we will continue to provide structures and support for continued student academic, social, social- emotional growth and development. Here at Falling Creek ~ We are PANTHER STRONG!

Who am I? I am a proud product of Chesterfield County Public Schools. After graduating from Monacan High School in 1988, I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Anthropology, Masters of Teaching Degree 1994 and coursework towards my Administration and Supervision Endorsement from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010. My teaching career started in Richmond City Public Schools as a teacher at ESH Green and Miles Jones Elementary and Hilburn Drive Elementary in Raleigh, NC and have taught grades 1 – 5. After earning National Board Certification: Middle Childhood Generalist, I became a middle school Math and Social Studies teacher at Leesville Road Middle in Raleigh, NC and Salem Church Middle School here in Chesterfield where I began my journey in administration as an Administrative Assistant and then Assistant Principal at both Salem Middle School and Carver Middle School, Associate Principal at Elko Middle School in Henrico and most recently as Principal of Lakemont Elementary School with Petersburg City Public Schools. This year I celebrate my 26th year as a proud educator, leader and fierce supporter of public education. My next goal is to earn a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership.

Why Falling Creek Middle? Falling Creek Middle is wonderfully diverse and offers the opportunity for the leader in me to effectively address diversity, equity and inclusion within our school while maintaining high behavioral and academic expectations for ALL! Falling Creek Middle school’s highly qualified and dedicated staff mirror my level of dedication in ensuring that together we create the most nurturing and academically challenging school environment where every child finds his/her place and excels!

What is my plan? To lead and work collaboratively with the Falling Creek Middle School Community and staff to maintain full accreditation and increase student performance across all subgroups. We are living in unprecedented times and the way we do school has drastically changed, however student mastery and our collective well being must remain our focus ~ We will continue to BE PANTHER STRONG! The way school looks for all of us will be different and unlike any other school year we have had thus far and I am ready to lead this group to continue GREATNESS both virtually and face-to-face. While engaging students in higher level thinking activities that are authentic and captivating, students will use formats available to demonstrate innovative approaches to learning that even we have yet to explore ~ Our Falling Creek Panthers are the future of our community.

Fostering strong relationships with teachers, staff, parents and students is my first priority as I embed myself in the culture of Falling Creek Middle. I want to hear from you and consider all voices as we deliberately plan and implement next steps for student and teacher growth ~ WE will continue to grow together. Through face to face meetings, virtual meet and greets, newsletters and weekly memos, I will be sure that there are no communication gaps within our learning community! You will find that I am accessible, visible and that my virtual and physical door is always open to hear from you.

I look forward to ROCKING Falling Creek Panther swag and meeting you all soon!

All in,
Sheryl Doswell

Shawn Horst

Assistant Principal

I was born in Tennessee and moved to Virginia when I was about four. I was adopted when I was seven and given an opportunity of a lifetime to be loved and cared for by an amazing family. Once with my new family, I grew up in the small town of Mechanicsville, north of the city. I attended Lee Davis High School for 9th-11th grade and transferred over to the brand new high school Hanover my senior year. I wrestled at the varsity level all four years of high school. Some of my accolades as a wrestler include 4x district champion, 3x region runner up, Regional Champion, 4x State qualifier placed 5th in AAA my senior year, and went on to wrestle at the national level.

I went on to James Madison University to continue my academic and wrestling career. I wrestled 3 years at a D1 level before the program was cut. I graduated from JMU with a degree in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies in 2008 and then with my Masters in the Art of Teaching in 2009. I landed my first teaching job in Henrico County at Fairfield Middle School in 2009 immediately upon finishing at JMU.

I started my career teaching 7th-grade science. After a couple of years, I took on more responsibilities to grow professionally. After nine years at Fairfield Middle school, I completed my administration and supervision certificate through Longwood University and was ready to make the jump into administration. I began my administrative career at Liberty High School, home of the Minutemen l, where I worked for the past two years.

I enjoy all water sports: (skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, skurfing, wakeskating, jet skiing). My wife and I are very active people who love to try new restaurants and foods. We also love to travel! We have been quite a few places all over the world: France, Spain, Netherlands, Iceland, Denmark, Germany, Canada, México, Ecuador, Perú, Panamá, Honduras, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, and Costa Rica. Some of our favorite things to do besides traveling and water sports are Hiking, Snowboarding, Riding bikes, and going for walks with our daughters and dog (Tracie).

I have a beautiful wife (Michelle) of five years and two daughters Fiona and Charlotte

who I absolutely adore. I have two sisters who both have two children each (three nephews and one niece) all under the age of 11. One of my brother in laws plays guitar in a reggae band called The Mighty Joshua and Zion Number Five so we try to go to as many of their shows as we can. Unfortunately, my mother passed away from brain cancer in 2009 after 53 short years, but I do my very best to live a life that she would be more than proud of.

I am so very excited to be starting a new chapter in my life by coming back to the Greater Richmond area and being able to serve as your assistant principal. I can’t wait to get to know all of you and if you ever need ANYTHING my door is always open. So, stop by introduce yourself and we are going to have a great school year!
