Transportation

The transportation system in Chesterfield County Public Schools is the largest in central Virginia.

Each day

  • We transport more than 55,000 students
  • Our buses travel about 26,000 miles
  • Buses cover more than 2,500 routes

The transportation department works to safely transport students to and from school each day.

When possible, bus stops are established to ensure that no elementary student must walk farther than about 0.3 miles and that middle school and high school students walk no farther than approximately 0.5 of a mile to the bus stop location.

Students must board and leave the bus at their assigned bus stop. Students should arrive at least five minutes before the time listed and 10 minutes earlier during the first week of school.

The transportation department reserves the right to revise or change bus stops. All students who are affected by any changes will be notified in writing.

  • There, students board a bus that takes them to the specialty center, governor’s school or CodeRVA.
  • For students in the Tomahawk Middle School attendance zone:
    • Parents must provide transportation for students to an express bus stop. These are group pick-up/drop-off sites located within three miles of their home.

Students who attend a center-based gifted (CBG) site in their attendance zone will ride their regular neighborhood bus to and from school.

For students attending a CBG site outside of their attendance zone:

Morning

Parents must provide transportation to a designated express bus stop – a group pick-up/drop-off location within three miles of their home. If a student’s home is located beyond the three-mile radius, the family should contact their area transportation office to discuss establishing a bus stop on a main artery road.

Afternoon

Tomahawk Creek Middle School students attending CBG sites at Swift Creek Middle School will ride buses to TCMS where they will board their neighborhood bus to go home.
All other students will be transported to the high school in their attendance zone where they will be supervised until boarding a high school bus that will take both high school and CBG students to their neighborhood bus stops.
Note that after-school supervision is not available for CBG students at CBG sites, TCMS or high schools after those schools are dismissed.

Parents who pick up their child after dismissal should do so at their CBG site. Parents who wish to pick up their child at their home high school or TCMS must follow pick-up procedures for those sites.

Due to inclement weather

When CCPS is closed due to weather, no transportation is provided.

Due to a Chesterfield County student holiday

When CCPS is closed but governor’s schools and CodeRVA remain open, parents must provide morning transportation to the middle school in their attendance zone. The bus departure schedule is below. From the middle schools, a bus will take students to governor’s schools and CodeRVA. In the afternoon, students will ride the bus directly to their express bus stop.
