Welcome to Bellwood Elementary School

Our History

What is now Bellwood Elementary School began as a one-room structure known as Kingsland Elementary School, located at Reymet Road and U.S. Route One. In the late 1910s or early 1920s, the school was moved to Perrymont Road and the name was changed to Bellwood Elementary School in honor of a well-known local family. The Perrymont Road structure was enlarged in 1947 with an addition that included four classrooms, an office, a clinic and an auditorium. Some of the principals during this time were: Jere Bunting, Lewis D. Johnston, Accie Gill, and L. Hylton.

The families served by Bellwood Elementary School recognized the need for a modern school building. In September 1966, the new school opened at its present location, 9536 Dawnshire Road, with an enrollment of 409 students. In 1968, the public kindergarten program began in Chesterfield County and six additional classrooms were added to Bellwood. This increased the school size to twenty-two classrooms.

The library was renovated and expanded to its present size in 1976; new carpet was installed in 2005. In 1983, a wing housing an art room, a music room and a physical education facility was opened to further expand the school. The building was air conditioned in 1990. In the summer of 2008, a new gym floor was installed.

Construction began in July 2009 on a new wing to include expanded office and clinic space, eight new classrooms, and an improved bus loop/parking area. In addition, the old office and clinic space were converted into instruction space, bringing the total of new classrooms to 10. The work was completed in August 2010.

Bellwood School grounds cover 19.5 acres of land with softball, baseball and football fields used by students and the Bellwood Athletic Association. There are also hardtop and grass playground areas.

Principals who have served the present school are: Miss Bertha Newell, 1965-1972; Mrs. Mildred Condrey, 1973-1980; Miss Linda Cosby, 1981-1987; Mr. Kenneth Wynne, 1987-1993; Mrs. Priscilla Horton, 1993-1997; Mr. Ernest Hicks, 1997-2004; Mrs. Robin Morgan, 2004-2011; Mrs. Jennifer Rudd, 2011-present.
