Core Beliefs & Our History

We believe:
Learning is our core purpose.
Effective teaching is the most essential factor in student learning.
Effective leaders support learning.
Trusting relationships and our core values (respect, responsibility, honesty, and accountability) foster learning.
Our citizens, parents, students, and employees are partners in sustaining competence and investing in excellence.
Excellence requires planning and change.

The present Swift Creek Middle School (SCMS) is an outgrowth of two earlier schools, also called Swift Creek, which were located at 11900 Hull Street Road. The present school is west of these two earlier sites and reflects the changing growth patterns in the county. Serving the needs of one of the fastest growing areas in the county, Swift Creek is located in a lovely wooded area of the Brandermill community southwest of Richmond off Route 360.

Ground was broken for the new Swift Creek Middle School on September 26, 1977 and after almost two years of construction, the school officially opened on August 27, 1979. Built on forty-two acres and costing approximately $5.5 million, Swift Creek was originally designed for 1000 students. However, because of the tremendous growth in this part of the county, the school opened over capacity with 1243 students. This prompted construction of twelve additional classrooms, which was started in February 1980 and completed in time for the next school year. Student enrollment continued to rise through 1984, prompting the construction and opening of nearby Midlothian Middle School in the fall of that year.

The reputation of Chesterfield County Schools and the community continued to swell enrollment. Again, the opening of two new middle schools, Bailey Bridge, in the fall of 1991, and Tomahawk Creek Middle School in the fall of 2008 allowed SCMS to operate at capacity. In the spring of 2011, Swift Creek Middle opened its new auditorium and remodeled performing arts classes.

Today, Swift Creek Middle has approximately 1000 students and continues its tradition of excellence. Swift Creek Middle offers a comprehensive school program which emphasizes the integration of technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and science. Starting in the fall of 2013, SCMS will be one of the first middle schools to be trained in Project Based Learning (PBL), which will provide another avenue for teaching 21st century skills. Swift Creek offers several high school credit courses, including Latin I & II, Spanish I & II, French I, Algebra, Geometry, Foundations of Technology, and Earth Science.

Swift Creek Middle School also encourages our students to initiate, engage in, and celebrate service, volunteerism, and the spirit of giving in order to become responsible citizens and servant leaders in our school, community, country, and world.
