Planning your arrival to Chesterfield County Public Schools

Welcome to Chesterfield County Public Schools! We are one of the largest school divisions in the state of Virginia with more than 64,000 students across 67 schools. Our yearly operating budget is nearly $1 billion. Many of our schools are award-winning, we have a 91% graduation rate, and our students earn millions in scholarships.

In addition to our traditional school settings, we offer two virtual options: Chesterfield Virtual School (K-8) and CCPS Online (9-12). We also offer a number of specialty centers and two Career and Technical Centers for students to focus on a specific area of study.

Enrollment

Families begin the registration process online through the ParentVue platform. Once the preregistration process is complete, the parent/guardian will receive an email notification that the application has been received. The school will then reach out to schedule a time to visit the school and complete the final steps of the registration process.

There are a number of documents required for the registration process including a student's birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency and more.

Important note: For incoming military families who intend to move to Chesterfield County in 120 days or less, Virginia law (Code of Virginia § 22.1-3) allows for enrollment in the school division of the child's intended residence if documentation is provided, at the time of enrollment, of military orders of the service member parent or an official letter from the service member's command indicating such relocation. The following is required:

  • Documentation such as a deed, signed lease, or ratified contract must be provided within 120 days of enrollment, or tuition may be charged from the day of enrollment.

  • The child must reside within the attendance zone for the school they are enrolled in.

  • Parents must provide transportation before the student resides in the district.

Kindergarten Registration

Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30 of the school year to be eligible to attend kindergarten. There are no exceptions to this state requirement. View our resources to make sure your child is kindergarten ready.

Important note: The children of active duty military parents who move to Virginia have provisions covered under the Interstate Military Compact. This provision of the Interstate Compact applies only to students of active duty military families transferring into Virginia from an out-of-state Local Education Agency (LEA). The children of active duty military parents will be enrolled in kindergarten even when the child has not started school, but the child would be attending kindergarten in an out-of-state LEA, if the military family relocation had not taken place.

Transfers During Senior Year

In some cases, military students may experience a school transition during their senior year possibly impacting their eligibility for graduation. The following guidance is provided in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children:

Should a military student transferring in his or her senior year be ineligible to graduate from the receiving local education agency after all alternatives have been considered, the sending local education agency, with the cooperation of the receiving local education agency, shall ensure the receipt of a diploma from the sending local education agency, if the student meets the graduation requirements of the sending local education agency. In the event that one of the states in question is not a member of this compact, the member state shall use best efforts to facilitate the on-time graduation of the student in accordance with subsections A and B of this Article.

Below are additional resources on facilitating on-time graduation for military transfer students.
