Awards and recognitions

Congratulations to Clover Hill High student Parker Black for winning first place in this year’s student video contest sponsored by the Virginia School Boards Association.

Congratulations to the Midlothian High boys volleyball team for capturing the VHSL Class 6 state championship.

Each year, Team Chesterfield gives generously to the United Way to support neighbors who need a helping hand. The school division’s Communications and Community Engagement team leads the United Way campaign in partnership with employees across the school system who volunteer their time to be the United Way contact in their schools.

Congratulations to Robious Elementary for being recognized with the prestigious distinction of the LabelFrancEducation from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of France in the United States.

The School Board celebrated the 30th anniversary of Communities In Schools of Chesterfield and recognized current board and staff, as well as the hundreds of dedicated and passionate individuals who have empowered students for the past three decades.

These bus drivers were recognized for outstanding performance:

  • Bhupender Singh, Area 1, Bus 364, one year of service
  • Corey Williams, Area 2, Bus 587, four months of service
  • Marc McWilliams, Area 3, Bus 648, one year of service
  • Rosy Lopez, Area 4, Bus 50, one year of service
  • Karen Ramos-Vasquez, Area 5, Bus 40, two years of service

These food service employees were recognized for outstanding performance:

  • Donna Pliego, food service associate at Tomahawk Creek Middle, five months of service
  • Donna Mate, food service associate at Clover Hill Elementary, 14 years of service
  • Doris Keeton, food service associate at Elizabeth Scott Elementary, 35 years of service
  • Yesenia Gonzalez, assistant manager at Chalkley Elementary, four years of service
  • Michelle Kennedy, assistant manager at Gates Elementary, 15 years of service

Board actions

The consent agenda was approved. Memos of interest included:

The board approved memo #176-23, which recommended that the School Board adopt the 2024 legislative program and work with the Chesterfield delegation of the Virginia General Assembly to implement.

The board approved memo #177-23, which recommended that the board:

  • Approve the above referenced proposed revisions to current policies and regulations.
  • Schedule these to become effective immediately.

The board approved memo #178-23, which recommended that the School Board approve redistricting to alleviate overcrowding at Enon Elementary. The approved zones take effect for the 2024-25 school year.

The board approved memo #179-23, which recommended that the School Board:

  • Approve the requests for FY2023 year-end funds as shown on attachment B.
  • Approve the resolution to the Board of Supervisors at attachment C.

The board approved memo #180-23, which recommended that the School Board authorize the procurement director to enter into a construction agreement with Kenbridge for the replacement Davis Elementary School building and site construction project in the amount of $51,991,000 and approve any necessary change orders up to the full budgeted amount for this project.

The board approved memo #181-23, which recommended that the School Board authorize the procurement director to enter into a construction agreement with Roof Systems of Virginia for roof replacement at Swift Creek Middle School and approve any necessary change orders up to the full budgeted amount for this project.

The board approved memo #182-23, which recommended that the School Board authorize the procurement director to approve change order #6 in the amount of $31,161 under contract (ADMN21000341) with NorthEast Contracting Corp. for the replacement of sheet metal flashing and trim at Chester Early Childhood Learning Academy during the fall of 2023.

The board approved memo #183-23, which recommended that the board:

  • Suspend its rules — as set forth in Policy 1200, Policy Adoption, Revision, Suspension — and waive a second reading of the policies contained in this memorandum.
  • Upon approval of recommended action #1 immediately above, it is further recommended that the School Board adopt the policies described herein, so that each is effective immediately.

The board approved memo #167-23, which recommended that the School Board approve the return of students who attend Falling Creek Elementary to the traditional school calendar beginning July 1, 2024.

The board did not approve memo #184-23, which recommended that the School Board approve the return of students who attend Bellwood Elementary to the traditional school calendar beginning July 1, 2024.
