Chief of Communications and Community Engagement Shawn Smith introduced these new administrators:

Recognizing departing advisory committee members

The School Board thanked advisory committee members who had completed their terms of service on the board’s various advisory committees.

Recognizing staff success

Congratulations to Dr. Matthew Strittmatter, principal at Elizabeth Davis Middle, for being named the 2024 Outstanding Middle School Principal of Virginia by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals.

Recognizing Food and Nutrition Services success

Congratulations to the Food and Nutrition Services Department and its summer farmers market lunches for winning recognition from the Virginia School Boards Association in the annual Food for Thought competition.

Congratulations to career and technical education students, teachers and administrators for multiple achievements.

Board actions

The consent agenda was approved as presented. Memos of interest included:

The board approved an amended memo #112-24, suspending its rules and waiving second reading so that policies on concussions, sick leave, bereavement leave and paid parental leave are effective immediately.

The board approved memo #113-24, authorizing the procurement director to award a construction contract to Oyster Point Construction Co. for the replacement Bensley Elementary building and site construction project for $43,451,250 and approve any necessary change orders up to the full budgeted amount for this project.

Board discussion

The board approved memo #114-24, designating Dr. John Murray (currently serving as the superintendent’s acting designee) as interim superintendent effective Sept. 1.
