During Read Across America Week, March 3-7, Greenfield Elementary students celebrated the “Books of [Their] Heart.” The school community connected through the books they love by reading together, holding a book character parade and sharing their favorite stories with one another. The week was a show of kindness, positivity and wonder.

A number of mystery readers also made surprise appearances to read aloud and share the importance of taking a look in a book. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lisa High visited Greenfield to read “What a Wonderful World”, a colorfully illustrated story of hope based on the lyrics of the song by Louis Armstrong.

Superintendent Dr. John Murray came by to read “Thank You, Omu!” a Caldecott Honor Book about demonstrating sharing and gratitude through the story of Omu, who makes a delicious stew for their neighborhood.

And School Board member Lisa Hudgins popped in to read “Peanut Butter & Cupcake” a story that teaches the value of friendship through the humorous, rhyme-filled adventures of anthropomorphic food.

The school’s theme for the week, "Books of Our Heart!" was inspired by the book “The Gift of Story: Exploring the Affective Side of the Reading Life” by John Schu.

Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association and guided by a committee of educators, Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading.
