National School Library Month: Battle of the Books brings readers together
Leading into National School Library Month this April, teams of fifth-grade students from more than 20 elementary schools across Chesterfield County got in formation for the annual Battle of the Books.
While the name may conjure images of a “Lord of the Rings” battlefield, the Battle of the Books is a fun and friendly competition that encourages students to celebrate and appreciate language arts, and engage with their school libraries.
In a quiz bowl format, school teams buzz in to answer questions about twenty different books selected by elementary school librarians near the end of the previous school year. Students spend an entire year working hard to prepare by reading, taking quizzes and practicing with their teams.
There are no big cash prizes and no hard feelings. When the points are totaled, the battlers and their classmates know it’s all to celebrate the love of reading and each other.
Learn more about this year’s Battle of the Books and see some of the recommended reading!
VIDEO: Houses spark joy and grow school spirit
Schools throughout Chesterfield County have embraced the house system as a way to build strong relationships and encourage good choices. Houses have different names, different emblems and different colors — but they all create spaces where students connect across grade levels, achieve common goals and make happy memories. Houses support their students by encouraging them to do their best and celebrating their successes along the way. This video shows how houses spark joy and grow school spirit throughout Chesterfield County Public Schools.

Hall of Fame Highlights: Katherine Baugher and Brad Peebles
In advance of our 2025 Hall of Fame gala, we are highlighting this year's remarkable honorees each week. Join us in honoring all of our inductees at the Hall of Fame Gala on May 1. Tickets are available now.
Katherine Baugher taught at Midlothian High School for 48 years and is arguably one of the most successful performing arts teachers in the history of Chesterfield County Public Schools. She not only directed 100+ financially successful and critically acclaimed plays but also positively influenced thousands of lives. She excelled at welcoming all comers to the theater program, creating a community that kept students motivated and connected. Her legacy continues in the thriving program she built and in the young people she influenced.
Brad Peebles filled multiple roles across 28 years with Chesterfield County Public Schools: biology teacher, assistant principal, coordinator of student conduct and principal. His decade leading the Juvenile Detention Center changed the trajectory of students’ lives and created a model for other districts. The perfect illustration of that was the greenhouse program he created to connect Juvenile Detention Center students with nature and with future possibilities. Brad died in 2018, leaving this world in a better state than when he had arrived 65 years earlier.
The 2025 inductees include: Katherine Baugher, Bessie Cooper, Kathy Kitchen, Catherine “Kitty” Neale, Brad Peebles and Linda Wood. Learn more about all our honorees on our Hall of Fame page.
