The library is where you go to learn something new. But where do you go if you want to do something new? At Salem Church Middle, the answer is -- the library! A new collection, the “Library of Things” is helping to transform learning and change perceptions of what a school library experience can be.
Started in the 2024-25 school year to encourage students to creatively practice and learn new skills, the Library of Things pairs a how-to book with the necessary items to perform that skill. These sets can be checked out by curious minds to take home and try for a week:
Waffle Maker
Donut Maker
Ice Cream Maker
Egg Bite Maker
Origami Kit
Crochet Kit
How to Play Chess Kit
Ukulele Kit
These combos were chosen based on student interest and the active clubs like the band, chess club and two crochet clubs. They were introduced during the school’s Maker’s Day with a delicious demonstration of the donut maker.
The idea for the Library of Things was inspired by similar collections. “Many public libraries include special items to check out for use,” said librarian Danielle Schafer. “I wanted to create a more dynamic collection and demonstrate to our students that a school library is more than just books.”
This novel approach to creating an engaging learning experience has been appreciated by the Salem Church community. “Our library team is extremely creative and committed to transforming the library from a place to check out books to a collaborative learning hub for our students,” said Principal Nicholas Olson.
The Library of Things is but one of the aspects of the Salem Church Middle School library that emphasizes active learning. Students can also work on collective art projects, see a student-curated “historical technology” exhibit that interprets ancient artifacts such as the cassette player, and watch a live wildlife cam featuring eagles from the National Parks.
The Library of Things was funded through the R.E.B. Award that Principal Olson earned this year. Thanks to the positive student response, Salem Church Middle plans to expand their Library of Things with new items like a digital camera, a guitar, and STEAM coding sets.
